UMWA 1993 Benefit Plan
The 1993 Benefit Plan was established under the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1993. The UMWA Health and Retirement Funds ("Funds") administers the 1993 Benefit Plan's day-to-day operations.
The 1993 Benefit Plan, provides health benefits to approximately 9,000 retired mine workers and their families. Health and death benefits for active miners and health benefits for most retired mine workers who receive their pensions from the 1974 Pension Plan are provided through plans administered by their employers.
In accordance with the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1993, 1998, and 2002, the Benefit Plan provides health benefits to certain retired mine workers and disabled mine workers who are not eligible for benefits under the Coal Industry Retiree Health Benefit Act of 1992 (Coal Act) and who are not receiving benefits from employer's benefit plans.
Plan Administration
All major policy decisions for the 1993 Benefit Plan are made by the board of four trustees who are the Plan Administrator. The duties of the trustees include interpreting the provisions of the plans and investing the assets of the trust.
As required by the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1998, the UMWA and the Bituminous Coal Operators' Association (BCOA) each appoints two trustees. Michael H. Holland and Micheal W. Buckner have been appointed by the UMWA, and Elliot A. Segal and A. Frank Dunham have been appointed by the BCOA. Mr. Holland is Chairman of the Trustees.
